Towards Tomorrow
Award winning Theatre Company, Peshkar Productions are proud to announce details of a forthcoming new production which has been assembled from hundreds of hours of interviews with first generation Asian people and their journeys to the UK.
‘Towards Tomorrow’ is a verbatim drama that has been collaboratively written by a dedicated group of new and emerging theatre makers who have documented these never before recorded oral accounts of the pathways and struggles to a new life thousands of miles from their original heritage.
The production is the culmination of the first phase of a project entitled ‘Unclaimed’ which seeks to unearth the voices and experiences of a range of first generation migrants from a variety of diverse communities. In addition, the project in its further stages hopes to identify other aspiring theatre makers from these backgrounds as Peshkar continue to set new standards in theatre for by and about the young British Asian experience.
Speaking about Unclaimed and ‘Towards Tomorrow’, Peshkar’s Associate Writer and lead artist on the project Tajinder Singh Hayer said “this production is the only first steps in massive undertaking for Peshkar. We are committed to documenting these stories as they are vital part of the social history of the UK in the last sixty years.”
The world premiere of ‘Towards Tomorrow’ is being staged as part of the Oldham Coliseum’s ‘Wordsmith O8’ new writing festival and will then be staged as a short community tour in and around Oldham, free to the public and as part of the town’s ‘Festival Of Diversity.’
Richard Grossick, the Festival of Diversity coordinator added “we are delighted to be able to support the production of ‘Towards Tomorrow’ in the local community and are sure that the rich and diverse community of the town will enjoy what promises to be a powerful and thought provoking piece of theatre.”
